This is a workshop course in designing practical
pieces of communication in a variety of media. In addition to the
readings and class discussions, you will design proposals for specific
pieces.
This is not a production class, it is not about media. It is
a pre-production course. In this class we will learn the steps involved
in conceptualizing, designing, and producing an individual message
and total campaign. We will be addressing how to plan a coherent
project, gather information, and work with the others who are involved
in assembling the campaign.
By the end of this course you should be able to identify the
steps involved in the communication design process, write behavioral
objective, and determine appropriate media and techniques for reaching
specific audiences. You will also be able to demonstrate a practical
understanding of the production steps required for each different
type of project.

Important Safety Tips
This is a professional communication course and
as such all required assignments (where appropriate) must be typewritten.
All papers will be graded for writing as well as content, and all
departmental writing policies will be observed.
All assignments are due at the beginning of class.
Late work will be docked one half grade for each day it is late.
Absence is not an excuse for late work. If for some reason you are
unable to make it to class you work should still arrive on time
(send it with a friend, federal express, homing pigeon). If you
must mail your assignment, it must be postmarked no later than the
due date.
Five brief papers are required. While they are
fairly self explanatory, each is explained in greater detail at
my website. You may go directly to the assignments page.
Attendance is mandatory. More than two absences
will be reflected in your grade. If you need to miss class for some
extreme reason please notify me before the fact.
