Reinforces and builds
upon skills and knowledge by providing on-the-job experience. Toward the
end of the degree program, each student works with an advisor to select
an internship either in a department of the University or with an outside
organization. This course gives students an "inside look" at the type
of career they're interested in pursuing. Students have served internships
with numerous organizations including the following:
AAA of Maryland
American Red Cross
Babe Ruth Museum
Baltimore Arena
Baltimore Museum of Art
Citicorp
Comcast Cable
Federal Reserve Bank
Harford County Media Resources
Maryland State Police
National Aquarium
Storage USA
University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center
UPS
Westinghouse
WHSW-TV
Note: Senior status and approval of program director required.
1. An up-to-date, ongoing (daily, etc.) journal which describes
day-to-day tasks, your reactions to what you see and do, and any observations
and insights you have about the job. (What things surprised you? Interested
you? frustrated or bored you? etc.) This journal should be submitted to
Dr. Shorr during the first week of every month during the internship.
2. Copies of representative work which you produce or have a significant
role in producing (news releases, PSA's, scripts, tapes, articles, posters,
etc.).
3. A three or four page paper, at the conclusion of the internship,
which analyzes the communication structures --formal and informal-- within
this organization. (If the head of the organization hired you as a communications
consultant, what advice --as well as praise-- would you offer him/her?)
4. Midterm and final conferences with your internship advisor.
5. Letter from the site supervisor verifying your successful completion
of the internship. That letter should at least say that you completed
the necessary hours and performed satisfactorily. The letter may, of course,
go into much more detail.
