CMAT 469 - Advanced Digital Video

Text:

"Picture Composition for Film and Television" 2nd Edition - Peter Ward
"Digital Video Editing with Final Cut Express" - Charles Roberts

"Inside Final Cut Express - DVD" - installed on lab computers

Films:

During the semester, will will be discussing a number of films at length. It is your responsibility to view these works on your own prior to class. I will hold 1 public screening of each film prior to discussion. Dates and times will be announced a week before. Other films will be excerpted for class discussion.

The films are:

  1. Witness - Peter Weir, Dir. 1985

  2. Chinatown - Roman Polanski, Dir. 1972

  3. E.T. - Steven Spielberg, Dir. 1982

  4. The Dead - John Huston, Dir. 1987

Supplies:

  1. 2 Mini-DV Video Tapes*

  2. CD-R(/W) Media, flash drive (something that lets you walk away with your files). Zips are ok, but have been problematic. Jams and data loss are common.

    • If you can afford it, think about an external firewire hard drive which will let you take home your video. (must have a clock speed of 7200 RPM - they run between $100-300. depending on size of drive)

  3. 2+ DVD-R Disks (Note: This HAS TO BE DVD-R (Not DVD+R).

  4. Headphones with a 1/8" jack (the one that fits your Walkman will do) You will not be allowed to work in the lab without headphones.

*available everywhere: Giant, RiteAid, Wal-mart, Target, BestBuy, etc.

Grades:

Projects - 50%

Exercises - 50%

Fine Print:

  1. It is illegal and unethical to use someone else's work without properly crediting the source . If you are not sure where that line is between needing to credit a source or not or between quoting, paraphrasing, and original language, or between imitating and copying an existing piece of work, please ask me in advance or err on the side of over-citing. If I discover that you've plagiarized material for this class, I will follow the University's policy for violations of academic integrity (see the UB Student Handbook), the consequences of which can include failing the course and expulsion from the University of Baltimore.

  2. Cell phones and pagers need to be turned off or to a silent mode. They disrupt class and no longer will be tolerated.

  3. This class assumes you've taken - and passed - CMAT369/PBDS585 (or equivalent at another university). Students are also expected to be competent in Photoshop.

  4. Attendance is mandatory. We cover too much material in class to make it up. You are permitted one excused absence. Final grades will be docked after that.

  5. Assignments are due on the date stated at the beginning of class. I accept no late work.

  6. Video production can not be done by yourself. It has to be a team effort. You need responsible well trained crew members to pull off the simplest production. Please show up on time ready to work.

  7. When you plan to work in the lab, bring the necessary video/audio tapes with you.

  8. All out of class assignments MUST be typed.

  9. Graduate students are expected to complete projects worthy of graduate credit. See individual assignment sheets.

  10. It is much easier to communicate with me by e-mail rather than telephone.

Web Board:

I have set up a listserv on the department's server "Astro". You are required to join this listserv. All updates will be posted there. It is also a great place for your to post questions, share interesting information, and study for exams. Astro Instructions.
