Multimedia Lab Directions

Login:

Login as Multimedia Lab user: a few programs will launch automatically, the Launcher and Accelware.

Check the status of your partition first:

Bring Accelware to the foreground by either:

  1. going to the Finder menu; drag down to and release on AccelWare icon OR
  2. clicking AccelWare icon in Launcher OR
  3. going to Apple menu/applications/AccelWare.

In the AccelWare window, double click on your partition to see its current access status.

Note: volumes are not listed in numerical order!

Gain access to your partition:

If all stations are listed as having no access, click OK and then click on your partition to highlight it and click the "write shared" button on the right side of the window. The partition will appear on your desktop. DO NOT quit Accelware, it must remain running in the background for you to access your partition. Simply click on a portion of the desktop to send the program to the background.

From there you treat the partition as you would any other hard drive, double click to open it and locate your folder. Save all items into your folder on the partition (from most application dialogue boxes click "desktop" then locate the partition on the list, open it and find your folder.)

I f another station has "write shared" access to the same partition you need, note which station it is, ask the person to save their files and release access to the partition to allow you to copy your files to the local hard drive.

To release access to the partition:

The person should save all files, quit the program they are working in and bring Accelware to the foreground. Then they will click on the name of the partition and then click on the "no access" button.

You then go to your machine and gain access to the partition. Find your folder and copy what you need (program icons & media folders) to the local hard drive inside the Multimedia Lab User folder on the desktop. After copying, release access to the partition to allow the other person to go back to working (don’t forget to tell the other user that you are done).

If you are working on the local hard drive, when you are finished remember to copy your files back to the partition you are assigned to and delete the files from the local hard drive.

All files left on the desktop or not in a folder will be deleted. All files on the local hard drive will be deleted. All folders larger than their allotment will be deleted.

Don’t forget to back up your pointers.

Using the Zip drive:

Move the Zip drive close to your machine. There is no need to unplug the power cord, there is enough slack to reach all machines. Plug the USB cable from the Zip drive into the computer (you must be logged in before you do this!). Put in your Zip. DO NOT work from your Zip. Copy your Zip files to your folder, unmount the Zip drive (drag the Zip icon on the desktop to the trash can) and then unplug the USB cable from your computer. Put the Zip drive back on the cart where everyone can access it.

Digitizing from tape & Exporting to tape:

The mini dv deck should not be unplugged from the station HAPPY. All stations can get the signal from the deck while it is plugged into Happy! PLEASE NOTE: Happy must be logged on (not at the login screen) for the deck to work.

Turn the deck on and insert your tape. Set up your Project Folder if you haven't already done so. Do not move the cart the deck is on, but you may turn the monitor to get a better view. Go to the capture window in the program you are working and go from there (or export/print to tape).**Make sure you digitize your material directly to your folder on the partition UNLESS you are working on the local hard drive.

IMPORTANT:

While you may work on any station in I-Movie or Edit DV, you can only digitize in Edit DV from Dopey & Sneezy and you can only digitize in I-movie from Happy & Grumpy. You must sign up for the correct system when digitizing. We reserve the right to move students from station to station to accommodate the most users.
