WRIT 334 - Writing and Graphics

Objectives:

This course will explore, through hands-on experience, the relationship between visual and verbal communication. The basics of graphic design and production (traditional and electronic) will be introduced. Writing skills will be sharpened. Students will use observation, research, and thumbnail sketches to explore ideas, as well as the Macintosh to generate type and page design. Exercises will be given in writing and design with the goal of integrating both skills. Creativity and clarity will be stressed equally, resulting in a body of work presented at the end of the semester which reflects each studentís abilities and interests.

Requirements:

1. Attendance is mandatory, as class discussions and critiques are an essential part of the class structure and process. Three or more unexcused absences will result in lowered grades and possible failure.

2. Assignments are expected to be completed and turned in on time. Failure to complete assignments on time will result in lowered grades.

3. Writing must be submitted as typewritten or word-processed double-spaced documents when not in typeset form.

4. Clip File: Students are asked to keep an 11" x 14" journal organized according to the following categories: writing, typography, color, photography, illustration, and page design. Collect examples each week to fill any category. After class discussion, paste the originals or clear photocopies into your file and include a brief comment on how each example works in terms of effectiveness and context of the communication. Write down why you chose this as an example of the category. Search out only well designed and well written magazines and publications as resource material.

5. Courtesy: Please arrive on time ready to participate, and keep portable communications devices turned off during class.
