How to use the In-classroom A/V & Computer Cabinets and Projector

There are four classrooms in the Charles Royal building (101A, 208, 305, and 308) that have identical equipment for showing DVDs, videos, and displaying the output from the provided Mac and Windows computers. These instructions will detail the procedures for using them and the provided projector.

Wireless Access

The Charles Royal building has wireless network capabilities in all areas using the industry standard 802.11b and 802.11g protocols. In order to use it, your computer must have a wireless adapter installed. When you first attempt to log on, a security alert pop-up box will appear when the browser software attempts to access the Internet. You must click "Yes" to accept the security certificate and proceed (JavaScript must be enabled for a successful authentication). The UB Wireless Network logon screen will then appear. Wireless users must use the UB network account/password that is also used to access e-mail, and the general-purpose computer labs. More information is available at http://www.ubalt.edu/ots/wireless/

Creating an Email Listserv for a Class

Instructors in the School of Communications Design may find it convenient to have an email list configured for their class. This allows the instructor to efficiently communicate with their students via a single email address, as well as allow for discussions to occur among students between class meetings. To have a list configured for your course, contact dpatschke@ubalt.edu. More information is available at http://astro.ubalt.edu

Creating a Blog

Classes/students, journals, and organizations within the School of Communications Design may find it effective to use a weblog to post information. To have a weblog configured for your purposes, contact dpatschke@ubalt.edu. More information is available at http://astro.ubalt.edu

Using WebTycho

WebTycho is a course management system that allows for classes to be entirely or partially presented and/or managed via the web, and is available for any UB course. Functions of WebTycho include: Assignment Folder for students to hand in personal work; Conferencing for class-wide asynchronous discussions; Study Groups for small group work; and Chat for real-time interaction. Supporting functions include Reserved Readings and Webliography. Instructors wanting to have their course set-up on WebTycho should contact Terry Ross at tross@ubalt.edu. Complete information is available at https://usa7.tycho.ubalt.edu/wtdocs/wthelp/html/aboutwt.html

Getting an FTP site for Students to Electronically Submit Work

If students will be submitting large electronic files that might be too large for WebTycho, an instructor can have an ftp site configured for their class. This ftp site is basically a "drop-box" folder that students can drop their work into, but cannot see the contents of or have any access to. To have an ftp site folder configured for you, contact the Office of Technology Services (OTS) at callcenter@ubalt.edu. These instructions detail how to use the site once it's configured.

Creating and Accessing Web Space

All UB (faculty/staff/students) are provided with web space via a web folder (referred to as an "H" drive). The information about the exact address and how it's accessed via a web browser is at http://home.ubalt.edu. To transfer data to and from this "H" drive, you must access it via ftp://home.ubalt.edu -- where CIS\ must precede your username (password is your normal password).

SCD Professors wishing to have a more conventionally named and permanent web presence on the SCD home site (http://raven.ubalt.edu) can contact dpatschke@ubalt.edu.

Access to Satellite Television Broadcasts

UB has a satellite dish and receiver that can be used to show live broadcasts, or to schedule a recording for later viewing. To have a satellite broadcast taped for later viewing, you must provide the Office of Instructional Technology a VHS tape, the name of the program, the satellite channel it's being broadcast on, and the start and stop times of the broadcast. You can also schedule a live viewing of a broadcast by contacting Instructional Technology (410-837-5596), who can provide you a list of spaces within the Merrick School of Business that they can route the signal. You will also need to separately secure one of those spaces though the Merrick School of Business.

Using Screen Sharing in the Graphics Lab

The Graphics Lab in the Charles Royal building is configured with screen sharing software, which allows instructors to "push" their screen to all the other screens in the lab while demonstrating software. Use these instructions to find out how to use the software.

Creating and Accessing an Online Survey

UB is currently involved in evaluating and selecting software that will allow instructors and organizations to create their own surveys and evaluate the response data. More information will be posted on this when it is available.

Graphics Lab Access

The Graphics Lab is a lab space that is used by SCD design and production students for their coursework. It is not an open UB lab, and access is determined by additional fees that have been added to the specific courses that require its use. To find out which courses and users have access to this lab, contact dpatschke@ubalt.edu. Complete information about the labs is available at http://raven.ubalt.edu/graphlab
