Spring 2006 Reading Series

Lorene Cary

Lorene Cary is the author of the memoir Black Ice, and the novels Pride and The Price of A Child, which was chosen as a One Book, One Philadelphia selection by the city's mayor. Her new book, FREE!, scheduled for May 2006 publication, is a collection of true-life Underground Railroad stories for young readers. A senior lecturer in creative writing at the University of Pennsylvania, she is the founder of Art Sanctuary, a non-profit performance series that brings black artists to speak and perform at the Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia. With its partner, Asian Arts Initiative, Art Sanctuary has won Pennsylvania's 2005 Governor's Award in the Arts for Creative Community collaboration. For her writing and arts activism, Cary was awarded her city's highest civic honor, The Philadelphia Award. Cary's essays have appeared in Newsweek, Time, Essence, Mirabella, and other publications.
Rachel DeWoskin

Rachel DeWoskin is the author of Foreign Babes in Beijing (W.W. Norton, 2005), which tells the story of DeWoskin's post-college years in China. Having arrived in Beijing for a PR job, she wound up as the star of a Chinese soap opera. The memoir is an insightful window into China during a time of sweeping cultural change. She holds a B.A. in English from Columbia University and an M.A. in poetry from Boston University. Her work has appeared in Ploughshares, Seneca Review, The New Delta Review, Nerve Magazine, The Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, Ann Arbor Observer, Drumvoices Revue, Conde Nast Traveler, Departures, Teachers & Writers Magazine, and Wanderlust, an anthology by Thundersmouth Press. She won an American Academy of Poets Award in 2000. The associate poetry editor at Agni Magazine, she teaches creative writing at NYU.
The Spring 2006 Reading Series is sponsored by the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts Advisory Council and presented by the M.F.A. in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts of the University of Baltimore's School of Communications Design.
