Dr. Peirce, professor emerita of English and founder of UB’s School of Communications Design, died of pneumonia Wednesday, August 31, 2005 after a year and a half long bout with cancer. She was 83.
Carol was respected nationally and internationally as an Edgar Allan Poe and Lawrence Durrell scholar.
At UB, where she taught from 1968 until AFTER her 2003 retirement, she
led the effort to create a university-wide upper-level general education
core and was an active member of every committee know to man and beast.
Gordon College of Liberal Arts Dean Larry Thomas said, “Carol
was a terrific scholar, leader, and entrepreneur. She, more than
anyone else, influenced the growth and development of the College of
Liberal Arts.”
Within the School of Communications Design, Carol was a visionary, expanding
the former English department’s offerings from a traditional
undergraduate literature program to a division that included professional,
technical, and creative writing, graphic and web design, video, hypermedia,
and more. Under
her leadership, the school added an M.A. in publications design, a
B.S. in corporate communication, and MFAs in integrated design and
creative writing & publishing arts.
Carol was one of the all-time great teachers. Students lined up
to take her courses --Tolkien, Shakespeare, Gifts of the Goddess, and
others.
She was a mentor to many, many faculty members. And she was a good
friend to us all, faculty, staff, and students alike.
Contributions in Carol's memory may be sent to the Carol Peirce Fund,
University of Baltimore Education Foundation (UBEF), 1420 N. Charles
St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
