They're a diverse bunch, these CommDesign students.
They range in age from their teens to their 60's and beyond. Some are Baltimore-born-and-bred (hon); others hail from Milwaukee, Seattle, Bangkok, and Sydney. A few own businesses worth millions; most are just starting out or looking to take the next big step in their careers. Students in the School are poets, painters, playwrights, publicists, C++ hackers, DJ's, photojournalists, band managers, business consultants, published authors, waitresses, bartenders, and master chefs. They raise kids, hold full or part-time jobs, brave the Beltway or catch the train from Washington or Philadelphia. They are headed for law school and Ph.D. programs, for careers in advertising, graphic design, writing, publishing, video and multimedia, webmastering, the next big thing.
But they do share common ground.
What unites these very different people is energy and commitment, a capacity for taking on multiple challenges and making good on all of them; an ability to stretch beyond familiar boundaries, to re-invent themselves as writers, designers, or technologists when they may have been none of those things to start. By the time they complete their degrees, our students share an understanding of the dialogue between word and image, the impact of media and technologies, and the changing nature of publication in a new century. Along the way, they've also invented new schemes, built projects, struggled to articulate ideas, formed teams and friendships.
Here are some examples of who we are.
