English Major. For some, it suggests an ivy tower life, reading dusty,
outdated literature, removed from and unprepared for the realities
of life in the 21st Century. For others, it suggests the Language Police,
people always ready to tell you that you dangled a participle, that
you need to learn the difference between "may" and "can," that you should
always put "i" before "e" except after "c."
The University of Baltimore's B.A. in English is a whole different
animal. With specializations in literature, writing, or discourse &
technology, UB's English students cultivate habits of attention, inquiry,
and analysis that come from reading and thinking about literature. They
develop an awareness of language, a mastery of technique, and a creative
vision as poets and fiction writers. They acquire professional writing,
editing, and technical communication skills that give them credibility
on the job market. And they gain a practical understanding of how technologies
shape ideas, forms of expression, and cultural values.
UB's English program prepares students for positions in publications
and communications (media production, graphic design, electronic publishing,
writing, editing, and public relations, for example), as well as providing
a solid education in theory and literary studies for those who intend
to pursue graduate degrees.
UB English majors specialize in one of three areas: Literature, The
Writing Programs and Discourse and Technology (select your speciality of interest to view full program requirements).
