New technologies are changing our values and shaping our culture.
In turn, the culture demands new technologies designed to respond to
these changes. English majors specializing in discourse and technology
gain a solid foundation in the background and ideas that inform culture
and literary tradition while they learn to solve practical communication
problems using technical skills. They come to understand how technologies
refashion our cultural values and how those values become the metaphors
for new machines. The discourse & technology specialization balances
theory and application. Students acquire a well-defined set of marketable
skills at the same time that they receive a strong liberal arts education
based in the study of literature. To achieve this, each student selects
at least one area of practical application (media production, hypermedia,
graphic design, or writing) in which to develop skills. To learn how
to think about a technology and the culture that surrounds it, students
also take courses in language theory and narrative discourse so that
they can understand how technology affects society and culture, how
it shapes forms of expression, and how it changes the literary discourse.
English majors specializing in discourse & technology take the following
