LITERATURE [27 credits]
Our rapidly changing world forces each of us to play many parts, and
our varied roles change, merge, and occasionally reverse. Breadth of
knowledge and intellectual flexibility are essential for our fast-changing
times. The specialization in literature offers a key for lifelong success
in its vigorous, eclectic approach to the study of literary traditions
and innovation. By analyzing language, literature, and literary discourse,
students gain insight into and an understanding of human experience,
what Byron referred to as "the power of thought—the magic of the
mind." They develop critical thinking skills and sensitivity to language,
which are increasingly recognized as essential preparation for a variety
of professions. English majors specializing in literature take the following
