Writing well isn't easy. It requires creativity and commitment, inspiration
and professionalism, voice and vision, passion and technique (as well
as procrastination, rituals, and revision, revision, revision!). The
Writing Programs offer practical strategies that help students develop
an understanding and appreciation of the structural and aesthetic principles
of writing as well as the ability to analyze how writing works. Students
in The Writing Programs specialize in professional, creative, or technical
writing. The professional writing specialization prepares students for
careers that involve writing and editing publicity materials, newsletters,
brochures, and magazines. The creative writing specialization prepares
students for lives as writers, editors, and publishers of fiction, creative
nonfiction, and poetry. The technical writing specialization prepares
students for positions in which they willll write and edit technical
proposals and manuals, software documentation, and articles and journals
on technical subjects. Students in all three specializations develop
writing and editorial skills that are adaptable to different audiences
and media. The program does not promise to make writing easier; but
it does promise to make graduates more confident, resourceful, and versatile
writers. English majors specializing in writing take the following courses.
