The level of knowledge and technological skill demanded of designers has taken
a quantum leap forward in recent years. Although some universities offer graduate
degrees in graphic design, computer graphics, information architecture, or
video production, none focuses on the integration of these media, their similarities
and their differences. The MFA in Integrated Design is built on the premise
that designers in the 21st century must be fluent in the language and concepts
of multiple media--not only print, but also motion/video, hypermedia, and Web-based
technologies. American businesses and institutions have begun to recognize
that, in an increasingly competitive world, design--more often than not-makes
the difference between those messages that communicate and those that are ignored.
Students in the Integrated Design program will develop problem-solving skills
for conceptualizing design solutions to communication problems; design skills
that will make those solutions visually attractive and effective; and production
skills that will allow them to physically realize those solutions. The MFA
integrates print, video, and digital media, a combination unique in the state
of Maryland. Students in the MFA Integrated Design program take the following
