Course Description
A course for all students who
wish to develop control and confidence in critical thinking and persuasive writing. Instruction will center on the analysis
and production of written arguments on issues of current interest or
enduring importance that are enriched by cross-disciplinary perspectives and multiple points of view.
Course Requirements
Argument by analogy and
argument of definition (approximately 500 words)
Rebuttal essay, evaluation,
and causal analysis (approximately 750 words)
Issue proposal (approximately
500 words)
Reductio ad absurdam argument
(any length)
In-Class examination
Position paper of
approximately 1500 words that demonstrates both original thinking and
appropriate synthesis and integration of materials taken from secondary
sources.
Regular and consistent
participation in class discussions that demonstrates both command of the
assigned material and original thinking (includes both in-class and online
discussion).
