OBJECTIVES:
The goal of this course is to learn how to give public readings and put out a literary magazine. You
will:
* Expand your knowledge of the literary marketplace;
* Bolster your critical reading skills so that you can become intelligent editors;
* Develop your personal literary aesthetic;
* Engage in the process of assembling a literary publication from start to finish;
* Understand how to work closely with writers;
* Become better readers/performers of your own work.
REQUIREMENTS
Participation 40%:
This class is experiential. I expect you to actively participate in all aspects of assembling a literary
magazine, as well as perform your own work; attend class on time and contribute fully in group
discussion. After two absences, your grade will be lowered for each additional absence. Chronic
lateness will be counted as an absence.
Papers 60%
Reading and Performance Review 20%: After your in-class reading, you will reflect on the experience and
write a 3-page analysis of your performance.
Final Review 20%: After completing Welter, you will write a 6-8 page analysis of your own
development as an editor and contributor of a literary journal.
Short Assignments 20%: Weekly homework assignments will be graded check, check plus, check minus,
or zero, and will be converted to an A, B, C, etc. in your final grade.
Readings (included in short assignments): I expect you to attend at least one MFA series reading on
campus and one reading off campus and write a one page response for each. See dates on syllabus.
All students are required to submit work to Welter.
