Words & Images: Creative Integration

NOTE: This is representative of the syllabi for this course. It is not necessarily the syllabus being used in any one semester.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Writing & Graphics is the threshold course in the Publications Design program. It introduces the student to areas of importance in publications process and theory. More specifically, it deals with the integration of writing and design to form unified publications. The course gives the student the knowledge necessary to conceptualize and produce various written and graphic works.

Procedures

Each student will complete carefully sequenced exercises in writing, design, and photography; projects which integrate words and images through the application of rhetorical strategies; and as the major assignment for the semester, a final project which combines research with writing and design. All work leading up to the final project may be revised as many times as the student finds appropriate.

Approximately halfway through the semester there will be a preliminary assessment of the progress of each student. At this time the instructors will differentiate clearly between major and minor assignments and help the student to decide which of these he/she should continue to revise.

The student's grade for the course will be determined through a portfolio review conducted at the end of the semester. During this review the instructors will evaluate all work produced, with particular attention to final revisions and to the final project. An A grade will be awarded for work representing mastery in both writing and graphics. A- or B+ represents excellence in one area, with very good work in the other.  B or B- represents satisfactory work in both writing and graphics. Since a C grade in a graduate program reflects unsatisfactory, a student will receive this grade if he/she has failed to demonstrate commitment to the course or necessary improvement in writing and design skills.

All assignments should be completed on time. (Meeting deadlines is an important professional habit to establish.)  Writing assignments must be typed (double spaced) and photocopied for submission to both instructors. Several students may be asked to provide enough copies for distribution to the entire class.
