Workshop in Literary Forms

PBDS 621

NOTE: This is representative of the syllabi for this course. It is not necessarily the syllabus being used in any one semester.

How will I know what I think until I see what I say?

                                                            E.M. Forster

Course requirements: This class will introduce you to different aspects of creative writing. You will experiment and play with different forms of poetry, memoir, and short fiction, some of which will be revised and handed in at the end of each section of the course. You will also read examples of each genre as preparation for each class meeting and write journal responses.

Format: This class will be run as a workshop. Each week, you will bring a draft with enough copies for each participant. All drafts should be typed and word processed so that you can save drafts and revise more easily. Poetry should be single spaced; prose double spaced. Expect to write for 30 minutes of each class and bring your journal.

Grading: Your final grade will be based on the quality of your writing and class work which includes discussion of readings and response to peers' work. Your writing assignments will also include short analytical essays (often based on journal entries); revised drafts in different forms; and a self-evaluation. If you miss class more than twice or hand in work late, your grade will suffer. Repeated lateness accumulates into absence. If you are having trouble with the work or attendance, please let me know so that f can help.

Connecting: I would like to set up a listserv so that members of this class can communicate with each other via email for announcements and any changes of plan. Always email me at home if you have any questions or concerns. If something is urgent (I only check my email once a day), you may call until 9:00 at night, or leave message and I will call you back. Expect to have at least one individual conference with me (we will set aside part of two classes for conferencing) early in the semester.
