NOTE: This is
representative of the syllabi for this course. It is not necessarily the
syllabus being used in any one semester.
Objectives
This course is intended to
familiarize students with the general principles, psychological attributes,
techniques, tools and
strategies that combine to make up visual communication. We will take the basic
concepts of design and bring
them into real world projects. Ultimately, the goal is to produce realistic,
tightly comped work for a professional portfolio.
Procedure
Each class will begin with
discussion on design principles and aesthetics. Following this, students will
present their work for group critique. New assignments will be discussed at the
end of class.
Work
Exercises: Three exercises designed to utilize different design fundamentals.
Projects: Three
projects created to simulate a real work environment,Utilizing design
fundamentals and
taking them deeper and into
realistic detail. The projects must be turned in on time, yet can be revised
for grade adjustment until the last class (One week before final critique).
Idea file:
Approximately every fourth week, students will be asked to bring in
samples of interesting design, or work that is not successful, as part of an
ongoing project. The samples should be arranged in a binder, along with a brief
description of the design principles displayed and why they are successful or
not. These will be discussed as a group. The final binder will be due the last
week of class (One week before final critique).
Final critique: The last
meeting will be 15 minute individual critiques. All of the projects will be
presented together as a package. In addition to careful consideration in the
design process, students are expected to prepare and present their portfolios
as professionally as possible.
Evaluation
Students will be graded on
the following categories:
Fundamentals: the use of fundamentals discussed in class: line,
type, shape, texture, balance, contrast, unity, value, color and most
importantly, concept
Design: how a problem is solved with relevant
and appropriate solutions
Innovation:
imagination in design interpretation
Craftsmanship: resourcefulness and skill in producing
finished comps
Presentation:
effective presentation of concept strategy and design solutions to a
group
Preparation: turning
all assignments and samples in on time and with enthusiasm , late work will be
downgraded at a rate of one letter grade per class period
Participation: paying
attention and adding relevant comments to class discussion and critiques
Attendance: It is
essential that students arrive on time and prepared for each class session.
After two absences grades will be affected negatively. Lateness and/or early
departures will be counted as an absence per two occurrences. Students with
special circumstances should speak with the instructor.
