PUBLICATIONS MANAGEMENT

 

NOTE: This is representative of the syllabi for this course. It is not necessarily the syllabus being used in any one semester.

 

Objectives

This course is intended to familiarize students with the process needed to manage design projects from start to finish. Learning the other (and equally important) side to being a successful designer: getting clients, generating proposals, building estimates, client vendor communication, creating great work, producing the work, hiring photographers, printers, production issues, print bidding, releasing jobs, and other relevant aspects. We will look at working systems and discuss the differences between a one person shop and larger organizations. Ultimately, the goal is to be prepared to function in a design office doing multiple tasks.

 

Procedure

Each class will begin with discussion on principles and process. Followed by, student participation and

project evaluation. New assignments will be discussed at the end of class.

 

Work

Exercises:  several projects created to simulate a real work environment,Utilizing management process and fundamentals. The projects must be turned in on time, they will be discussed in class

(Late exercises will receive no credit).

 

Group Research Presentation:  students will be asked to partner together to create a research project. Each will be responsible for an equal share of the project. A presentation of their findings will be made to the class,  who will rate and discuss it. An outline of the presentation will be turned in to the professor.

Notebook:  students are to create a binder to organize all relevant information both provided by the instructor and gathered individually.

 

Evaluation

Students will be graded on the following categories:

 

Attendance:  It is essential that students arrive on time and prepared for each class session. After two absences grades will be affected negatively. Lateness and/or early departures will be counted as an absence per two occurrences. Students with special circumstances should speak with the instructor.

 

Participation:  paying attention and adding relevant comments to class discussion and critiques

 

Preparation:  turning all assignments in on time and with enthusiasm , late work will be downgraded at a rate of one letter grade per class period

 

Presentation:  effective presentation of research and solutions to a group

 

Fundamentals:  the use of fundamentals and processes discussed in class.

 

Innovation:  imagination in project interpretation
