Designer's
Survival Guide
COURSE
OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course you should be able to: develop a design
strategy by creating a list of questions to ask potential clients; execute
comprehensive layouts capable of being printed on a conventional printing
press; communicate with print vendors using standard printing terminology; and
troubleshoot basic pre-press issues.
REQUIRED
READINGS: Handouts will be
distributed in class.
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS: There will be a series of activities and computer projects that
will enable you to put into practice information discussed in class. Although I
encourage you to put thought and effort into your designs, this is a production
and not a design course and, as such, project grades will be based on technical
execution. In addition to these projects, you will be required to complete a
one-day vendor internship and present your findings in a paper and to the
class. Attendance is mandatory as you will be responsible for materials not
available elsewhere.
